South Padre Island Winter Outdoor Wildlife Expo

On February 6, the 16th Annual Winter Outdoor and Wildlife Expo drew many visitors at the South Padre Island Convention Center. With more than 20 presentations, attendees found plenty to peak their interests. Presentation topics ranged from nature photography, ocelots and birding to fishing, boating and beachcombing.

Special presentations by Master Falconer Jonathan Wood delighted audiences. Woods presented hawks, falcons and eagles, explaining the characteristics of each. In the last year, he has added an Aplomado Falcon and Mexican Eagle to his already impressive collection of raptors.

Many of the birds in Wood’s Raptor Project have permanent handicaps and have been donated to his project because they could not be re-introduced to the wild. Wood and his wife Susan house the birds at their 14-acre facility in New York’s Catskill Mountains. Check out http://www.raptorproject.com/.

In addition to the presentations, the Expo hosted a wildlife art exhibit and a silent auction. Exhibitors included the Sea Life Center, World Birding Center, Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, Sea Turtle Inc and the Gladys Porter Zoo.
